Carlos Ferres
We met one of our greatest and best friends in the field of Sport Psychology in Uruguay, Montevideo, in 1985, when we traveled to Copenhagen for the World Congress of Sport Psychology. We had to stay in Montevideo for a day to catch a flight to Denmark. There we met the team psychologist from Uruguay, Carlos Ferres. We spent a few hours talking about the new field that was arriving in his country to support sportspeople. He learned that in 1981 we held the First Brazilian Congress of Sports Psychology in Porto Alegre, attended by 1,750 participants. Since then, we’ve remained friends, with productive communication that began with Ferres holding meetings and courses to expand knowledge of sports psychology. As a university lecturer, he always had a vision of building knowledge in order to empower those who practiced or were lecturers in various areas who supported different sports. Because he believed in sports psychology, he planted the seed. He invited professionals to expand the teaching of the new area. When he felt that professionals in the field needed to be better organized, he created the Sociedad Uruguaya de Psicologia del Deporte – SUPDE – with colleagues. Some members appeared to have a good teaching profile. He always promoted them and made a point of not letting his personal brilliance show. He coordinated the first Postgraduate Course in Sports Psychology at his Faculty, where we were there to teach, as well as several national professionals. The course was fully booked (180 students) and was the first in Uruguay’s history. This continued until the 1st Sudamerican Congress of Sports Psychology was held in Montevideo in 1995. He continued until he passed on SUPDE’s mission to his colleagues. In 1997, at the II Congreso Sudamericano y I Iberoamericano de Psicología del Deporte, held by the South American Society of Sport Psychology – SOSUPE, with 600 participants in Santiago, Chile, he was honored with the photo that illustrates the event. We had the pleasure of presenting him with the well-deserved award. He was looking forward to receiving recognition from his community. Now, writing this obituary, the question remains: does a human being like Carlos ever die? We have been sure for many years that teachers who contribute to education, to building the knowledge of their people, which results in increased self-esteem and the health of the population, never die! He has gone to eternal life, which we don’t know, but he lives on here, in each of his students, consciously or unconsciously, perhaps helping them to face today’s perverse world. I wish God to sustain his wife Adriana, children and grandchildren in their suffering. Thank you, my friend and brother, for having accompanied us in the earthly world for a period of time that has enlightened us greatly. Later on, God willing, we will be living together again in eternity.

Ps. Carlos Ferres Rial
Conocimos a uno de nuestros más grandes y mejores amigos en el campo de la Psicología del Deporte en Uruguay, en 1985, cuando viajamos al Congreso Mundial de Psicología del Deporte en Copenhagen. Estuvimos un día en Montevideo para poder tomar el vuelo a Dinamarca. Allí conocimos al psicólogo de equipos de Uruguay, Carlos Ferrés. Pasamos un par de horas hablando sobre el nuevo campo que se abría en su país para ayudar a los actores del ámbito deportivo. Supo en ese momento del Congreso Brasilero de Psicología del Deporte que tuvo lugar en Porto Alegre, al que asistieron unos 1750 participantes. Desde ese momento mantuvimos nuestra amistad, con una comunicación muy productive que comenzó con Ferrés manteniendo reuniones y tomando cursos para expandir sus conocimientos de Psicología del Deporte.
Como profesor universitario, siempre tuvo la visión de construir conocimiento para poder empoderar a quienes practicaban o enseñaban sobre las variadas áreas que sustentaban los diferentes deportes. Porque creía en la Psicología del Deporte, plantó la semilla. Invitó profesionales para expandir la enseñanza de aquella nueva área. Cuando sintió que los psicólogos del deporte necesitaban estar mejor organizados fundó, junto a colegas, la Sociedad Uruguaya de Psicología del Deporte -SUPDE-. Algunos de los miembros de la sociedad tenían un buen perfil docente. Siempre los propulsó y puso cuidado en no dejar que su brillantez personal los opacara. Coordinó el primer Curso de Psicología del Deporte para graduados en la Facultad de Psicología, en que participamos junto a colegas uruguayos. El curso se completó (180 estudiantes) y fue el primero en la historia de Uruguay. Esto continuó hasta el I Congreso Sudamericano de Psicología del Deporte realizado en Montevideo en 1995. Y continuó hasta que dejó su lugar en la SUPDE a otros colegas. En la fotografía del año 1997 que acompaña este acto, en el II Congreso Sudamericano y I Congreso Iberoamericano de Psicología del Deporte, organizado por la Sociedad Sudamericana de Psicología del Deporte -SOSUPE-, con más de 600 participantes, en Santiago de Chile, fue distinguido. Tuvimos el placer de homenajearlo con una muy merecido premio. Con gusto recibió el reconocimiento de su propia comunidad.
Ahora, escribiendo este obituario, una pregunta viene a mi mente: ¿Es posible que un ser humano como Carlos alguna vez muera? Hemos estado seguros por muchos años de que los maestros que han contribuido a la educación, han creado conocimiento sobre su propia gente, que han resultado en el aumento de la autoestima y la salud de un pueblo, nunca mueren! Ha trascendido a la vida eterna, que no conocemos, pero vive acá, en cada uno de sus estudiantes, consciente o inconscientemente, quizás ayudándolos a enfrentarse al día a día de este perverso mundo. Espero que Dios de consuelo a su esposa Adriana, a sus hijos y nietos en su sufrimiento. Muchas gracias querido amigo y hermano por habernos acompañado en la vida terrenal por un tiempo que nos ha iluminado mucho. Más adelante, si Dios quiere, estaremos viviendo juntos otra vez en la eternidad.
