Tribute to Dr. Daniel M. Landers
“It is with deep sadness to inform you that Daniel M. Landers, a longtime member of APA Div 47 and its second president, passed away on June 18, 2023. He was 81 years old. Dan completed his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in 1968 under the mentorship of Gunther Lueschen. He then moved on to teach at SUNY Brockport where he mentored numerous undergraduate students getting them involved in research. From there he went on to the University of Washington, Pennsylvania State University, and finally Arizona State University where he retired in June 2008. He mentored over 50 master’s students and 20 doctoral students.
Dan was the 2003 recipient of Div 47’s Award for Distinguished Scientific and Research Contributions to Exercise and Sport Psychology. He also served as the President of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) from 1985-86, received NASPSPA’s Distinguished Scholar award in 1995, the President’s Award in 2007, and was the co-founder and inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sport Psychology (which later became Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology) from 1979 – 1985.”
