Obituary-Guido Shilling
17.3.1939 – 30.8.2024
It is with profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude that we share the passing of Guido Schilling, a visionary in the field of sport psychology, who passed away peacefully on August 30, 2024. Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Guido dedicated his life to advancing sport psychology and played a pivotal role in promoting international collaboration during some of the most challenging periods of global relations.
Guido Schilling served as President of the European Federation of Sport Psychology (FEPSAC), where his leadership helped define the organization’s vision and direction. His influence extended to the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP), where he served as Treasurer from 1985 to 1989. In recognition of his remarkable contributions, Guido was honored with the prestigious ISSP Honor Award in 2013 at the Congress in Beijing. Due to his health, he was unable to personally receive the award, which was accepted on his behalf by his close colleague, Roland Seiler.
During the Cold War, a time marked by tensions between ISSP and FEPSAC, Guido’s strong character and enduring friendship with Miroslav Vanek were instrumental in fostering cooperation between the two organizations. His efforts underscored his unwavering belief in the power of collaboration and dialogue, even in the most difficult circumstances.
Guido was also a mentor to many in the sport psychology community. He generously shared his insights, whether in formal settings or through personal conversations, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him. His work in bringing together ISSP and FEPSAC members, particularly after the Berlin Wall’s fall, helped restore and strengthen relations between the organizations, further solidifying his legacy as a bridge-builder in the field.
Guido’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide the sport psychology community for generations to come. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Farewell, Guido. Your influence remains like a steady stream flowing ever forward.
